Hello Parents and Caregivers,
Ballad Health presented a webinar on Tuesday regarding what they are seeing with this year’s influenza cases and their recommendations to the school systems in our region. Here is a summary of what Ballad is experiencing and what they recommend:
- This is not a typical year for the flu. The majority of pediatric cases are testing positive for Influenza Type B with a longer duration of illness.
- This flu may not be immediately accompanied by a fever. School nurses need to be aware that some of the pediatric cases are testing positive for flu without fever (the fever shows up on the second day). Due to this information, HCS nurses will continue to monitor for flu-like symptoms and call home as needed..
- Ballad is not recommending for school sites to close due to the flu. Instead, they are requesting for school personnel to continue encouraging good hygiene and cleaning practices. Our staff has been actively cleaning and disinfecting throughout each day as well as at the end of each school day.
Please note that we are closely monitoring attendance for students and personnel at school sites. We are also closely monitoring the number of students being sent home with flu-like symptoms. As of yesterday, the district was averaging 93% for daily student attendance and nearly 90% for staff attendance.
Thank you for supporting the healthy guidelines and practices sent out earlier this week. It is making a difference. We have seen attendance rates actually increase as we head to the end of the week.
