Created by Renaissance Learning, AR is a reading software management tool and is used by more than 55,000 schools in the United States.  Students select books on their reading levels, read the books and take reading comprehension quizzes using the computer.  In order to assist teachers to determine a student's reading level, students take the STAR computerized reading placement test twice yearly.  The STAR software reading placement test includes vocabulary, word-length, sentence-length, etc. Students earn points based on the type of book they read, how many books they read and the percentage of questions that they correctly answer.  The library media center at HES administers and provides technology support for the AR program, and the incentives, rewards, and student goals for each grade-level are determined by the grade-level teachers who work with their students daily.
