General Expectations for All Schools

The Hawkins County Schools support the concept of family engagement in the education of students as essential to improving the quality of education for all students.

The Hawkins County Schools have involved parents in the joint development of the School District Parent Involvement Plan.  Hawkins County School district will provide technical assistance and other support necessary to assist schools in planning and implementing effective family involvement activities.  In addition, annually, the Hawkins County Schools will provide parents information related to the school district parent involvement plan and district and school performance.

The school district requires each school to establish a Family and Community Engagement Council.  To the extent possible, the Family and Community Engagement Council will be a demographic representation of the school.  This School Council will be responsible for:
  • Developing, implementing, and assessing the individual School Engagement Policy
  • Determine what action needs to be taken, if any, to increase participation in family engagement activities
  • Identify barriers to participation in family engagement activities
In addition, each school will:
  • Annually distribute the Home-School Compact to families
  • Participate in the annual parent meeting
  • Provide at least two parent training and activities to promote Family Engagement
  1. Focus on strategies to improve homework, attendance, and discipline
  2. Convene at varying times to accommodate family schedules
  3. Invite all families to attend activities through written and verbal notice
  4. To the extent practicable, the school will provide full opportunities for participation of parents with limited English proficiency, parents with disabilities and parents of migratory child
  • Provide parents with procedures to learn about the course of study for their children and have access to all learning materials
  • Inform parents of the right to access their children's official records
  • Integrate Family engagement activities with the Hawkins County Family Resource Center
  • Utilize the Family Resource Center for technical assistance on policy development
  • Provide parents with written procedures on how to access the Parent Involvement Policy, the Hawkins County Schools Parent Involvement Plan, and curriculum
  • Provide parents a written description and explanation of the curriculum in use at the school, the forms of academic assessment used to measure student progress, and the proficiency levels students are expected to meet
School supports the concept of family engagement in the education of students as essential to improving the quality of education for all students.
In order to encourage Family Engagement, Hawkins Elementary will:
 
  • At the beginning of each school year,
  1. Distribute the Home-School Compact to families
  2. Provide parents with information on learning about their child's course of study and access to learning materials
  3. Provide parents with information on accessing their child's official records
  4. Provide parents (by following the written process in the handbook) upon request with information on observing classes, if necessary)
  • Educate the school staff on how to reach out, communicate and work with  parents as equal partners and on the value and contributions of parents
  • Provide parents with reasonable access to teachers through school phone numbers, school e-mail, and scheduled meetings
  • Hold at least two parent-teacher conferences (Fall and Spring Semester) to discuss the individual child's achievement
  • Provide frequent progress reports to parents (Six-week report cards and, if necessary, mid-six weeks reports)
  • Provide at least two parent training and activities
  1. Focus on strategies to improve homework, attendance, and discipline
  2. Convene at varying times and locations to accommodate family schedules
  3. Invite all families to attend activities through written and verbal notice
  4. To the extent practicable, provide full opportunities for participation of parents with limited English proficiency, parents with disabilities, and parents of migratory children
  5. To help parents  work with their children to improve their achievement, such as literacy training and using technology to foster parent involvement
  • If appropriate, follow the District Family and Community Engagement Plan
