Dressed in a historically accurate reproduction Civil War mourning dress  with an authentic mourning veil, Jamie Mowdy Shifflett shared information about the Civil War with HES students, including Rogersville's role in the Civil War.  Shifflett, a Rogersville native whose great-grandfather, Earnest Fain, served in the Confederacy, currently lives in Northern Virginia and has belonged to the 49th Va. Infantry Reenactment Group for 16 years.  Shifflett gave a brief overview of the history of the Civil War.  Topics included a historical timeline, significant figures and events, major battles, the Underground Railroad and the role of women in the Civil War.  Shifflett, a descendant of Nicholas Fain, the first mayor of Rogersville, discussed the local customs in Rogersville during the Civil War or the "Brothers War" as she explained the Civil War was referred to in East Tennessee.  Shifflett's visit coincided with the 5th grade's Civil War unit.
