Beginning this school year, 2009-2010, the Tennessee Department of Education will implement the Tennessee Diploma Project (TDP), a broad overhaul of standards and curriculum designed to challenge students and better prepare them for college and the workforce.
The Tennessee Department of Education has determined that too many students were graduating from high school without the necessary skills and knowledge required to succeed after high school. The Tennessee Diploma Project is making changes so students are taught the skills employers and educators say are necessary to perform well in a job or at the college level.
The Tennessee Department of Education has made changes to the graduation requirements by increasing the number of credits required from 20 to 22. The additional credits are gained through an additional math class, personal finance, and physical education/wellness. Beginning with the graduating class of 2013, this year’s freshman class, Hawkins County Schools will require 26 credits for graduation. The increase above the state requirement is due to the block scheduling. Students will have their choice of electives to fulfill the additional 4 credits.
