Key Club Convention 2008-Club Brings Home Awards

On March 14, 2008, thirteen Key Club members went to the District Convention held at the Choo-Choo Hotel in Chattanooga, Tennessee. This annual event is the highlight of the Key Club year, where members are recognized for their accomplishments.
The thirteen Volunteer students included Samantha Sams, Barbara Hale, Debrah Walters, Justin Barton, Jake Mashburn, Emily Hobbs, Radu Cioata, Casey Byington, Travis Crawford, Britanie Michuad, MyKayla Russell, Alex Foster, and Ashley Bledsoe. These students, along with Ms. Debbie Merritt, the Key Club advisor, made the four hour drive to Chattanooga, along with Sullivan North and Sullivan Central High Schools.
When the club arrived, they had some time to get things situated for the night’s activities. At seven o’clock, the club headed for the first meeting of the weekend. This gathering was the kick-off that included the special guest of the weekend, Ethan Zohn. This Keynote speaker was the winner of Survivor Africa and started the Grassroots Soccer Program with his winnings. Other activities for the night included workshops, caucuses to elect the new district board, and a pizza party.
On Saturday, members rose early in the morning to walk the streets of Chattanooga with Ethan and over 450 other Key Club members. After the walk, members returned to a meeting room to receive awards for collecting money for the Grassroots program. Volunteer raised $360 and received second place. Overall, the district collected over $8000!
After the morning events, the club had the afternoon to go to the mall. When the club returned to the hotel, it was time for the awards ceremony. The club received the Dues on Time Award, first place Scrapbook, second place Ronald McDonald House Fundraising, third place Achievement, second place Single Service, and the Distinguished Club award. After the awards, the club attended one more caucus session and the district dance.
On Sunday morning, the club sent two delegates, Samantha Sams and Casey Byington, to the House of Delegates meeting. After the meeting, there was the Governor’s Farewell Brunch. This brunch marked the end of a great weekend and the beginning of the new Key Club year.
