The School Health Services Program provides
coordinated school-based nursing services to ensure quality
individualized health services. Our goal is to facilitate daily school attendance and
enhance academic achievement, guiding students toward a healthy
future. We work
closely with individualized schools, families and the community
in keeping children healthy. We currently have 11 nurses, a full
time health educator, and an administrative assistant on staff
serving the Hawkins County School System. Below are some of the
services we provide:

Nurse clinics: caring for
students who are sick or hurt
·
Care of students with special
medical conditions
·
Oversee/dispense medications
according to school policy
·
Coordinates health screenings
(communicable diseases, vision, hearing, BMI, scoliosis, BP etc)
·
Immunization audit, monitoring
student health records
·
Assesses health needs of
students, interprets medical data, writes Individualized Health
Plans (IHP) and follows
up on
referrals as needed
·
Participates with staff in
developing and implementing school health programs
·
Instructs school personnel in
American Heart Association CPR/First Aid
·
Classroom instruction in all
areas of health including puberty, family life, hygiene, dental,
nutrition, alcohol, tobacco and drugs.
·
Promotes wellness activities
·
Provides health information and
resources to community, parents and school personnel
·
Serves as a resource to the
community, students and staff
·
Liaison between home and school
regarding health concerns: participating in parent conferences,
home visits, referrals
·
Serves on the Truancy Board and
Community Health Council
·
Is a member of community interdisciplinary teams
·
Provides health counseling
regarding chronic illness, nutrition, disease prevention and
positive lifestyles.
