What's On The Menu?
Five food group components (meat/meat substitutes, fruit, vegetables, bread/grains, and milk) are included in a school lunch. For the regular price of lunch, a student may choose 3, 4, or 5 items. The price remains the same whether the child chooses 3, 4, or 5 items.
Choices may be made as follows:
Meat Group-Choose 1
Meat or a meat substitute
Fruits and Vegetable Group-Choose 2
Vegetables
Salads Except Chef)/Other Plated Salads
Fruit/fruit juice
Bread/Grains Group-Choose 1
Bread
Crackers
Pasta
Roll
Milk Group-Choose 1
½ pint of milk
Students may leave off one or two of the items or they may choose something from all 5 groups. Two food groups may come in one item. A sandwich is an example, which most of the time will contain bread and meat. Students must choose at least 3 items, one from 3 of the 5 food groups. A variety of fresh fruits and vegetables and salads are offered in the elementary schools.
For breakfast, students are to choose 3 items from the 4 food groups offered.
For after-school snacks for at risk children, they are served 2 of 4 food groups.
Special Diets
If a special diet is required because of a chronic medical problem, a prescription from the child’s physician must be on file with the School Principal’s office and the Child Nutrition Office. The Director Child Nutrition must review and approve the requests for special diets.
Encourage your child to choose food items that are nutritious and to choose a variety of food for a well-balanced meal.
