All ABE programs are free of charge and are geared to the individual needs of adult learners. Through ABE programs adults can:

• Gain the speaking, listening, reading, writing and math skills required for job advancement.
• Increase self-esteem, personal growth and personal freedom.
• Gain the necessary skills to meet the entrance requirements for vocational or other educational training programs.
• Study to pass the General Education Diploma ( GED ) high school equivalency test.
• Learn English as a second language.
• Obtain problem-solving and thinking skills needed to meet the growing demands in the workplace.
• Learn how to become an active participant in their children's education.

Impact of a GED Credential

• More than four in five GED graduates(85%) surveyed planned to enroll in post secondary educational programs.
• Passing the GED on average, signifies the attainment of a level of literacy widely viewed as neccessary for social and economic advancement.
• Adult education provides much-needed training and skill enhancement to undereducated populations to help them enrich their quality of life in the home, community and workplace.
• Other opportunities for undereducated adults in Tennessee include: learning basic academic skills, classes to refresh skills, on-site and workplace education programs and opportunities to enhance family literacy.
