Students were asked to write a description of a place, real or imagined. Here are some of their responses.
I recently went to this awesome place. Its’s DOLLYWOOD! When I got there, we rode this bus (trolley looking thing called a “tram”). It didn’t have any doors. The seats were gray and cool which felt good on my legs because I was hot. As we rode, the air blew on my face it felt great! When we finally got to the park, I got off the tram and headed over towards this line you go through to get in. I got my season pass out and slid it through the machine. The first place I went was the roller coasters! They had three roller coasters: Thunderhead, Tennessee Tornado, and my favorite, Mystery Mine.
While we were in line, we heard laughs, giggles, screams, and we even heard crying because children were scared. The coasters throw you back and forth and were rough! Later, we went to The Country Fair which is basically a place with rides for all ages. The Dizzy Dish was a ride that I rode at the Country Fair. It just sways from side to side and spins, but it’s pretty cool. Later we had lunch. The yummy smell of smoked sausage, funnel cakes, fried veggies, and popcorn filled the air and made my stomach grumble. I ate a smoked sausage sandwich that tasted amazing, chips, and a funnel cake. We walked around and rode a few more rides, but after that we left for home. I didn’t want to leave but it was about to close. I am definitely going back.

As we were driving through the long forest, I saw tall trees, very tall trees. Then as we crawled out of that bright yellow jeep, I saw what we came for. It was a lake, a lake in San Francisco.
I figured that we had come to fish or something. As we walked through the long grass, I discovered that I was wrong. We were here to have a picnic in the sun. While my siblings got the food together, I looked around. I noticed the flowers along the steep river’s ditches. I wanted to jump into the dark waters of the lake. That I knew wasn’t possible for the fact of the matter was that I hadn’t brought swimming trunks.
Finally, the food was prepared and I bit into my, soon to find out, delicious sandwich. I thought that we weren’t coming back there so I really did not want to have to leave. After we were all through eating, I looked around at the grass, flowers, lake and the sky. Then a moment later, we left never to return again.

If you’re ever in the west part of North Carolina, you have to visit Camp Kanuga. It’s a great place to take students. I went there on a 5th grade field trip.
It’s very beautiful there. The mountains are huge, and they’re very steep. At the very tip-top of the mountain, there’s a magnificent rock. It’s called Eagle Rock. It looks like a giant gray eagle sitting and watching for its prey. The trees around it are so green like jewels, and they’re so tall. There are birds flying everywhere calling out like they’re lost. As you reach the bottom of the mountains, there is a big lake. The sun sparkles off of the lake like you would see on a movie. On the other side, a pretty white cross stands as tall as a tree. You can see people laughing, almost tipping their boat over, and screams along with laughs. There are continuous walkways along the creeks, packed with beaver dams and trees everywhere.
Their food is also the best. It tastes like fresh homemade cooking. The cafeteria looks like a long log cabin with tables and hundreds of talking kids. You can smell the fresh food and feel the heat as soon as it reaches your mouth.
It’s never quiet there during the day. Kids are always screaming. You can hear the basketballs jumping up and down, and you can always hear the peaceful sounds of nature.
This was a very special place because I have a lot of memories from there, and it was probably one of the greatest times of my life.

My favorite place to go is the barn. I go there almost every day. When I first drive up, I hear the horses nickering back and forth to each other. I also listen to the cows mooing across the field. We leave the radio on so that they can enjoy it even when I’m not there. So when I walk in, the radio is on. As I walk in, I also smell the distinctive smell of horses. It is a lot different compared to roses and perfume. It smells better than anything ever.
When I walk in the stall of the horse, I want to go ride that day. When I saddle up and trot up to the area, I see cows grazing on the grass. As I glance over to my left, I see them sleeping on the hay that we just put out for that week. I see the baby foals in the same field and their mothers feeding and eating. That is my favorite place to go in the whole wide world.

Whenever you walk through the front doors of Carraba’s, you get the feeling of sensation. There is a silver bell at the top of the door as you walk in. When that bell rings, a waiter or waitress will be standing there to serve you.
As they take you to your booth or table, you are greeted and surprised by how soft and plush the cushions in the booth or table are. The tables are very clean and sparkly.
When the waiter or waitress takes your order, be prepared for what will come next. The food! The food there is marvelous. Their pizza, spaghetti, and lasagna are the best! Their pizza is very cheesy and gooey. It tastes very good, since it is an Italian restaurant.
As you are eating, the manager will ask if the meal was good. Then the manager will ask if the waiter or waitress was pleasant or not. If he or she wasn’t nice, or if the food was bad, you will get your meal free! The next time you are hungry on a Saturday night, come to Carraba’s.

I visited Hilton Head Beach in South Carolina. They have lots of activities like parasailing, wave boarding, and surfing. The beach had perfect white sand and crystal clear water. You usually see dolphins jumping out of the warm, clear water. There is perfect salty air and a gentle breeze. You can taste the salty water from the sea. You can see the crabs running on the soft, white sand. You could hear the waves crashing on the shore. After that, you would get hungry and go to Steamers where you could get the most amazing sea food ever, such as crab, shrimp, fish, and oysters. It was the best beach trip ever.
