Thank you so
much for sharing your children with me this year. It has been a great year. I
hope that I have helped instill in them a love of reading, and the desire to
be lifelong learners. I wish them only the best. Have a great
summer!! For the
upcoming sixth graders and parents: UPDATED LIST Dear
Parent/Guardian: We look forward
to having your child become a sixth grade student at Church Hill Intermediate
School (CHIS). It is our mission to enhance and develop skills necessary for
life long success. In order to best meet the needs of our students, we are
implementing a Summer Reading Program at our school. It is proven that a
student’s reading level has a direct effect on his/her academic
achievement. Therefore, it is essential that we continue our commitment to
reading throughout the summer break. The purpose of the Summer Reading
Program is to encourage all CHIS students to enjoy reading and to view it as
a means to gain valuable knowledge. It is required that
each student participate in the Summer Reading Program. Each student should
read one of the books from the following list. Students will be taking an
Accelerated Reader (AR) test on each of their books. This will help them get
a head start on reaching their AR goals for the next school year. In
addition, each student who passes (80% or above) the AR tests for both books
will receive two 100’s on test grades for his/her commitment to
reading. In addition, students may read additional books and keep logs for
extra credit. Logs will be due during the first week of school. Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix A young man is in
hiding because of his government’s population law. Rocket Man: The Mercury
Adventure of John Glenn by Ruth Ashby The book is about the
life of Astronaut John Glenn. You Want Women to Vote, Lizzie Stanton by Jean Fritz The book is a
biography of Lizzie Stanton, a women’s right activist. Big Field by Mike Lupica The story is about a
boy, his father, and baseball. A The book is both a
poetry book, as well as a book about the poet. Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt Would you live forever
if given the choice? Read to find out what choice is made by the main
character in this story. The Voyage of the Frog by Gary Paulsen A young boy must
survive when his boat loses its course at sea. The Melanie befriends the
new girl, April due to a shared interest in ancient Wringer by Jerry Spinelli Palmer must decide
between doing something he doesn’t believe in (being a wringer at the
town’s annual Pigeon Day) or take a stand. Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor The Escape Under the Forever Sky by Eve Yohalem Lucy moves to kidnapped, Lucy will take
everything she knows in order to escape and survive. Way Down Deep by Ruth White The story is about a young orphan girl who lives in a remote mountain town. The Faerie Path by Frewin Jones A young girl
discovers she is the lost princess of Faerie. ***Any
Caldecott or Newbery award winning book can also be read as a fulfillment of
the summer reading requirement. All books are
available at Church Hill Public Library, Kingsport Public Library or at any
retail book store. Have a great summer reading!! Mrs. Hill –
Gold Team Reading
Ms. Williams

– Gold Team Language Arts I would love
to hear from you regarding your comments about the summer reading program. It
is my hope that we can work together to help your children become lifelong
readers, and improve their comprehension in all content areas as well. I
really want the students to have fun with this, so I have included a list of
suggested books. This list was developed based on librarian recommendations,
and popular books according to educational websites. Please email me at hillt@hck12.net with any concerns or
questions. Thank you so much for your continued support. |

Disclaimer: This is a
tentative schedule that may change due to student mastery of state standard or
inclement weather. I will follow the
board policy for absences. Please feel free to contact me at hillt@hck12.net concerning any assignment. I will contact you regarding your
question as soon as possible. Please remember that if your child has a planner, it is his/her responsibility to bring the completed
planner to each teacher to initial. The assignment for the day is always
posted on the board in every classroom, and each student needs to copy down
any homework assignment by himself/herself. If he/she completes it in class,
then he/she can bring it to the teacher to initial, so that parents will know
what has been completed in class, and the night’s homework assignment. |

Please remember to
be reading 30 minutes each day. Please encourage your child to
strive to meet his/her AR goal each six week. He/she receives two points on
his final average for meeting his/her goal. In addition, he/she will be invited
to attend a special event (such as ice cream party, pizza, etc.), and he/she
gets a Panther Paw each six weeks that he/she meets the goal. |
