Applying math in today’s world

Home

This year, we are focusing on applying math to solve real world problems, developing new skills in algebra and geometry and learning to think like mathematicians.  We are following the state guidelines so that our students will  have a firm foundation. I expect each student  to learn these foundation skills so that they be able to apply math.  In doing this, they should do well in high school and on standardized tests. I saw ‘WHY study math’ on homeschoolmath.net. Here is my summary and thoughts:

In the future, students will need to be able to live independently in a world full of advanced technology.
They will need to deal with math, computers, credit, loans, shopping, and handling money. Even today, some companies require algebra tests in order to be a cashier at a store.  Students will need firm foundations in percents, parts, wholes and proportions.  They will need to understand the base rate and charges for service workers of all kinds (plumbers, electricians, roofers, taxi-cab drivers, etc.).

Students need to be able to make sense of all the information that is thrown at them on a day to day basis and decide whether the information is true or false.   To do this, they need to have knowledge of statistics, probability and a good sense of numbers and estimation, so they will not be victimized.

Students may not know what they want to do in the future and we need to prepare them for careers that might involve math or science.

Math teaches good deductive reasoning which is useful in all areas of life in helping to solve problems.
